That time whatsapp was not exist so I started to use skype.
You can install skype on windows very easily from app store too. You can install skype on your android device as well.
Skype doesn’t exist on Ubuntu’s repository. So you can’t install skype on ubuntu by running simple command “apt-get install skype”

Check if Skype exist on Ubuntu’s repository
Repository is place, where all packages are stored. This is an official repository and maintained by Ubuntu developers.
You can use apt or apt-get command to install package easily on Ubuntu.
It’s writer’s recommendation to update repository before go on any type of work with it.
Following command can be used to update repository
$sudo apt-get update
vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$sudo apt-get update [sudo] password for vijay: Hit:1 http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal InRelease Hit:2 http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates InRelease Hit:3 http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-backports InRelease Hit:4 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable InRelease Hit:5 http://ppa.launchpad.net/linuxuprising/java/ubuntu focal InRelease Get:6 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security InRelease [107 kB] Hit:7 http://repo.mysql.com/apt/ubuntu focal InRelease Get:8 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security/main amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [16.6 kB] Get:9 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security/universe amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [208 B] Err:10 https://repo.skype.com/deb stable InRelease 504 Gateway Time-out [IP: 2a02:26f0:60:89d::1263 443] Fetched 124 kB in 27s (4,639 B/s) Reading package lists... Done W: Failed to fetch https://repo.skype.com/deb/dists/stable/InRelease 504 Gateway Time-out [IP: 2a02:26f0:60:89d::1263 443] W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$
You have updated your latest packages list. Now you can check if Skype exist on repository or not.
Here are two methods to check existing package on repository.
First Method: Use search option followed by package name with apt-get command. the syntax will be as below:
$sudo apt-get search skype
vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$sudo apt-cache search skype libopus-dev - Opus codec library development files libopus0 - Opus codec runtime library hashcat - World's fastest and most advanced password recovery utility libopus-ocaml - OCaml interface to the opus library -- runtime files libopus-ocaml-dev - OCaml interface to the opus library -- development files pidgin-sipe - Pidgin plugin for Skype for Business and Microsoft Lync toxic - curses Tox based instant messenging client skypeforlinux - Skype keeps the world talking, for free. vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$
If you don’t see the package in search result, it means package doesn’t exist.
Method 2: Try to install package: When you try to install package, If the package doesn;t exit on the repository, it will not be installed and show the result something as below:
$sudo apt-get install skype
vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$sudo apt-get install skype Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done No apt package "skype", but there is a snap with that name. Try "snap install skype" E: Unable to locate package skype vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$
Have a look at the end of the above result, “Unable to locate package skype”
You can figure out after see this result, skype package doesn’t exist on the repository.
But I got one clue in the above result. It is “No apt package “skype”, but there is a snap with that name. Try “snap install skype”
So, No I should try snap install skype.
Let’s see what happened
snap command to Install skype on ubuntu
Snap is a store contains thousands of snaps (software/package), used by millions of people across 41 Linux distributions.
You can consider Ubuntu one of 42 Linux OS.
If you’re running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) or later, including Ubuntu 18.04, 19.10 and Ubuntu 20.04 you don’t need to do anything. Snap is already installed and ready to go.
Finally you are using Ubuntu 20.04 then your system is ready to install package from snap store.
You can use following command to check package available on snap or no
$sudo snap find skype
vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$sudo snap find skype [sudo] password for vijay: Name Version Publisher Notes Summary skype 184.108.40.206 skype* classic One Skype for all your devices. New features. New look. All Skype. audio-recorder 3.0.5+rev1432+pkg-7b07 brlin - A free audio-recorder for Linux (EXTREMELY BUGGY) guvcview 2.0.6+pkg-f796 brlin - A simple v4l2 full-featured video grabber spreedme 0.29.5snap1 nextcloud* - Spreed.ME audio/video calls and conferences feature for the Nextcloud Snap ramboxpro 1.3.1 ramboxapp* - Rambox Pro discord-yamiyukisenpai 0.0.9 yamiyukisenpai - Free voice and text chat vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$
You can see in the above result that skype is available on snap store. Thats a good news for you.
You will get all the details of package including name, version, publisher and notes. Notes is important.
You find skype on Snap store, now you can install by using snap command followed by install option.
I used following command to install skype on ubuntu 20.04
vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$sudo snap install skype --classic skype 220.127.116.11 from Skype* installed vijay@Ubuntu-20:~$
Int above example Skype has been installed successfully. It will take some time so don’t worry about it.
I have used –classic at the end of command it means this package note is classic.
